In January 2010, the Ministry of Planning began moving back into the Red Building, its distinguished headquarters of decades past. Given its name because of the red mosaic tiles that encase the building's exterior, the Red Building is one of Baghdad's most iconic landmarks. However, over the course of the 2003 Iraq War the entire Red Building complex sustained catastrophic damage and subsequent looting and vandalism. This led to major losses of Ministry assets as well as many of their records and archives. Since then, the Ministry of Planning has been forced to rent out scattered buildings to run their operations and accommodate their needs.
With USAID/Tatweer's technical assistance and advice, the ministry has begun to consolidate its widely-dispersed departments and offices back into the Red Building complex once again. The newly restored building will host many of USAID/Tatweer's contributions to the Ministry. In addition to a full outfitting of state-of-the-art IT assets and network infrastructure, USAID/Tatweer has assisted with numerous other components of the MoP headquarters. This includes the Administrative Tribunal, a courtroom in which contract disputes are resolved. In addition to procuring a number of components for the Administrative Tribunal, including IT infrastructure and court session recording equipment, USAID/Tatweer provided extensive mentoring and technical assistance during its creation. Additionally, the Red Building will house the fully-equipped MoP Training Hall and the MoP Media Center. USAID/Tatweer has been instrumental in the MoP's efforts to move forward and establish a new legacy in their traditional headquarters.
